Kowloon Walled City – Grievances

San Fransisco’s Kowloon Walled City, at this point, needs no introduction.  After falling hard for their 2012 release, “Container Ships” like I would a nihilist bad boy, I had pensive hopes for their third full length, “Grievances.”  I knew I was into it but I couldn’t quite figure out why.  Out on Neurot Recordings, it was even bleaker than their last, with less emotion to grasp onto; melodic or otherwise.  It seems as though the this record had them whittling their sound down to the bare essentials, still capturing the barren, vastness of previous albums, while extending their signature...

American – Coping With Loss

There are many things that can bring two reclusive humans together who are usually a fair distance apart; be it family ties, sex, a wrong turn off the highway into an area with no cell phone reception to call a tow truck when your engine dies or in the case of American, a partner to create the most blackened, filthy noise out of every instrument they lay their palms on, with. Following two demos in 2013 and a couple of singles, American’s first full-length “Coping With Loss” was released on Sentient Ruin Laboratories back in August of 2014, limited...

Bad Case Of Big Mouth – Straight Up Bad Luck

I’ve been left with a lot of questions, face palms and awkward lip curls.  Sometimes there’s things you wish you never knew existed, like the combination of pickles and peanut butter or 2 girls 1 cup, yet there they are, existing all the same with no rhyme or reason.  Someone came up with those concepts and thought they were good!  That’s the craziest part.  Now take this band, Bad Case of Big Mouth for example.  Prior to this, my ignorance of easycore as a thing was placed high up on a shelf, far out of reach, even while perched...

Ommadon – V

Some albums are just meant to be recorded live.  Glasgow’s Ommadon released “V,”  on August 4th, 2014; a lengthy, 2 track, self recorded album, which they did on The Hill Of Maud in the Scottish Highlands during the winters of 2012 and 2013.   Mastered by Billy Anderson who’s worked with the likes of Eyehategod, Sleep and High On Fire, this albums takes ambient doom down another notch to the point of sonic alienation. Ommadon thoroughly incubates their presence with ‘V1.’  Through a period which seems like it may take years before notice any tell tail signs of their...
