Arkaik – Lucid Dawn

It is interesting how I can change course in musical tastes from day to day. One day it could be thrash, the next it could be funk. Sometimes Spotify makes this jump for me when I am playing my saved songs on shuffle. I am so glad I have not painted myself into one little musical corner, so I can enjoy whatever comes up from song to song. Nevertheless, we all go on binges. This time it is the fourth album of Riverside County, California’s progressive death metal technicians Arkaik. The band’s previous album, “Metamorphignition,” was released in 2012,...

Queensrÿche – Condition Hüman

The trials and tribulations of Queensrÿche are well documented: the separation from their original front man Geoff Tate and subsequent battle over the name of the band. In 2013, when Queensrÿche released their debut album with new vocalist Todd La Torre, it was incredibly well received by fans of the group. The album was everything they hoped for and more. It was a return to the style of Queensrÿche of old, which was a Queensrÿche we had not heard much in the last 25 years. “Queensryche” was a pleasant surprise, as I did not expect the band could still...

Metal Allegiance – Metal Allegiance

September 2015 seems to be the month of super groups. Next to The Hollywood Vampires, consisting of a bunch of no-names like Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, Joe Perry, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum, Metal Allegiance also released their debut album on Nuclear Blast Records, September 15, 2015. Metal Allegiance initially started as a live band, playing mostly covers of metal classics. The core members of Metal Allegiance are drummer Mike Portnoy, guitarist Alex Skolnick, bassist Dave Ellefson, and songwriter Mark Menghi. Sprinkled amongst this backbone are a who’s who of guest musicians, lending their talents to the ten songs...

Kronos – Arisen New Era

The best French brutal death metal band is finally back! After 8 years of waiting, Kronos has returned with their most epic and ambitious album to date, “Arisen New Era.” Having helped spearhead the death metal movement in France in 2005 alongside Benighted and Morbid Collection, Kronos spawned one of the best French extreme metal albums of the first decade of the 2000s, when they released “The Hellenic Terror” in 2007. The spirit that has inhabited the group since its inception allows Kronos to create colorful and catchy songs with interesting structures, without losing their brutality and heaviness. Unfortunately,...

Rivers of Nihil – Monarchy

Few death metal bands have risen to prominence quite as fast as Reading, PA’s Rivers of Nihil. I stumbled upon them back in 2012 on Reverbnation, checked out their video for ‘(sin)chronus,’ and was blown away. Then came ‘Sea of Nuerons,’ ‘Chambers of Civility,’ ‘Epoch of Emptiness,’ and others from their 2009 EP “Hierarchy,” and 2011 EP “Temporality Unbound.” The band was obviously rough but had many good things going for them. The following year, Rivers of Nihil released their first full-length album, “The Conscious Seed of Light.” I reviewed it for this very site, and proclaimed it one...
